Hi

Lilfie - Sorry I am only just replying to this but I have been soooooo busy with one thing and another

Anyway here I am now and I shall give you some advice on how to paint this sort of furniture. First of all I will give you some basics but what I also need to know is for the 'final finish' is - do you want to stencil it? Marble it? Or would you like what I call my 'French Antique Style'. Now cos I know you are into 'shabby chic' I will give you my French Antique Style finish and if you decide you don't want this particular look then let me know and I will give you some other ideas on other finishes that you could do

1. First of all you need to 'prime' it - I like using B.I.N.123 Primer (I use this particular one cos it will cover any 'bleeds' that you may get from the pine knots - you can purchase this in England from a few places but I get it direct from 'Dulux Trade Centre'. If you haven't got a Dulux Trade Centre near you - if you look on the internet there are quite a few firms who would deliver it direct to your door.
You will need to use 3 coats of this - it is very quick drying so you could do it over a couple of days.
2. When you have put the three coats of primer on then you need to put one coat of Eggshell on - for the French Antique Style I use Magnolia colour. Let this dry for 24 hours.
3. Final finish is - waxing - I use 'Briwax' and the colour I use is 'Antique Pine' which you will be able to purchase from any pine shop or again if you want it delivered to your door - you can get it off the internet. Put this on with a soft cloth - but be careful not to put too much on - you don't need loads. Then finally get another clean soft cloth and 'buff' it up to a nice sheen.
Then there you have it. But there is one thing I ask of you is that if you do this to your furniture then please let us have a look when you have completed it. Don't forget to take a photo of the 'Before' (cos sometimes I have forgotten to do this) and then take another one of the 'after'.
HAPPY PAINTING
