Hi  SmileyinBox Lilfie - Sorry I am only just replying to this but I have been soooooo busy with one thing and another  BangHead Anyway here I am now and I shall give you some advice on how to paint this sort of furniture.  First of all I will give you some basics but what I also need to know is for the 'final finish' is - do you want to stencil it? Marble it? Or would you like what I call my 'French Antique Style'.  Now cos I know you are into 'shabby chic' I will give you my French Antique Style finish and if you decide you don't want this particular look then let me know and I will give you some other ideas on other finishes that you could do  wink

1. First of all you need to 'prime' it - I like using B.I.N.123 Primer (I use this particular one cos it will cover any 'bleeds' that you may get from the pine knots - you can purchase this in England from a few places but I get it direct from 'Dulux Trade Centre'.  If you haven't got a Dulux Trade Centre near you - if you look on the internet there are quite a few firms who would deliver it direct to your door.

You will need to use 3 coats of this - it is very quick drying so you could do it over a couple of days.

2. When you have put the three coats of primer on then you need to put one coat of Eggshell on - for the French Antique Style I use Magnolia colour.  Let this dry for 24 hours.

3. Final finish is - waxing - I use 'Briwax' and the colour I use is 'Antique Pine' which you will be able to purchase from any pine shop or again if you want it delivered to your door - you can get it off the internet.  Put this on with a soft cloth - but be careful not to put too much on - you don't need loads.  Then finally get another clean soft cloth and 'buff' it up to a nice sheen.

Then there you have it.  But there is one thing I ask of you is that if you do this to your furniture then please let us have a look when you have completed it.  Don't forget to take a photo of the 'Before' (cos sometimes I have forgotten to do this) and then take another one of the 'after'.

HAPPY PAINTING  Angel13

Cool, thanks for the steps!
I hope my mum will be happy with it all.

I've searched around for white dressers. They all seem to be very expensive so i thought if i get this one and paint it it may be cheaper than some dresser available. Thing is i'd like to know how much the primer, eggshell and wax cost? The table is £120 so i thought i could work out the overall price

Hi Lilfie GrinAngel

Well I buy in bulk cos obviously I do lots of it but I would say it would cost you approximately £50-£70 for all three items - which is about £20-£30 each for your primer and eggshell and £10 for the wax.

I did notice Lilfie that you said that you have searched around for 'white' dressers etc - but the colour I have said that I use for the 'French Antique Style' of 'Magnolia' is actually cream not white and I just wanted to make it clear to you that if you used white instead of the cream it will not give you the same 'finish'  smiley  So if it is another type of finish you want then let me know  smiley  Hope this helps you.

And..... as I said in my other post if your mum wants to ask me any questions at all or she wants to see photos etc tell her to please feel free to 'ask away'  smiley

Hi  SmileyinBox everyone.  I think everyone must be very busy lately and probably the good weather is making you want to be outside instead of in. I know I have had and have still got a lot on so I know how you all must be feeling   wink  Anyway hope everyone is OK

Just wondered if you had painted that furniture yet Lilfie?  smiley

SmileyinBox Hi Lilfie - obviously your mum doesn't realise how nice the furniture can look when painted - I know some people think 'oh my god' - and that is what my friend's partner thought when my friend said I was going to paint all their pine furniture in the lounge - but when he saw it he was 'gobsmacked' and couldn't believe what a difference it made and how beautiful it looked.

It would probably save your mum a lot of money - but some people like to see things first and don't trust what somebody might say.  Has she looked on my website - although I know photos don't really do justice to the piece of furniture either really.

But hey I suppose at your age "what mum says - mum has" !!

Are you leaving home to go away to university?  Will that be in September?  What university are you going to?  And what will you be studying? - Fashion Design?

Nice to talk to you Lilfie and perhaps when you live on your own or with friends you might get the chance to have a go at the painted furniture !!

My mum can be a little stubborn. We're going to paint my bedside table though, so we'll save some money as the bedside table is quite expensive. My mum bought a lot of our current furniture from a warehouse in Blackpool ages ago and so she suggested going there to see if theres more nice cheaper furniture but she said afte August and i cant wait that long!  Huh?c

I'm not going to uni this year but next year in september i will.  Cheesy I'll probably go to Manchester, i know it quite well. And i may study business or psychology or a mixture of both. I didnt take fashion design or any art of any type for A-Level.

GrinAngel  Ah we can all be a bit stubborn I suppose Lilfie  wink  Hope you get on alright painting your bedside table though - don't forget as I keep saying - take some before and then your after pictures !!  It is a good idea to go and get some cheaper furniture that 'needs doing up'.  I've sourced lots of pieces of furniture from auctions etc - you can pick up some really nice pieces - in that I mean 'styles' that look a bit worse for wear and then 'do them up'.  I always find it quite exciting getting an old piece then making it look really nice and different!

I'm sure you will Manchester if you go - I've been there several times when I was working as a Personal Assistant and had to stay 2 or 3 days either in meetings or on some course or another - it's a very busy city with lots and lots to do.  It would be good to study both business studies and physcology if you can.  I always say - have as many branches to your tree as you can  wink

Have you made any new items of clothing lately?

Ah yeah. I'd like to do some furniture work. But i dont know who'll be my customers, maybe if i put them on ebay but i may not even get that far.

Where do you do your furniture work? Would it be in a garage or outside?

And i havent made any new clothes recently =[
I plan to make loads when my rooms done because otherwise i wont get anything done. And as you know my rooms going no where therefore my clothes are going nowhere but i plan on making a summer dress. Im just a little worried that my room wont be done before the summers over then my summer dress will be...useless...

I'm in the same boat Lilfi smiley, I'm going to make windows replacement  in the beginning of next month and then
all walls have to be repainted, I really hate all the mess that things like that make  Angry2  and usually can find none of my stuff. BangHead
Fortunately I have atelier where I paint and work, so it's not so bad  smiley
anyway look forward to seeing some of your new designs when you have some done  Wink

SmileyinBox Hi Lilfie - sorry I haven't come back to you sooner but you know how  busy busy bees we are  Cheesy

I'm lucky enough to have a 'studio' where I can do all my work - my artwork, painting furniture etc but when I didn't I used to do it in the house cos the garage was too cold and I get a bit 'nesh'. CryBaby  I just used to lay down some plastic sheeting - you know the stuff you can buy for tablecloths and stuff (It is also called 'oilcloth')- you can get some really pretty ones and you can also buy it off the markets by the metre so you can have as much or as little as you want then it saves you getting paint all over the floor tiles or carpet. It is not very expensive.  I have actually painted in my kitchen and my lounge and the last house I was in had a cream carpet!!!  and I never got any paint or anything on it cos I protected it with this stuff.

About your summer clothes I see what you mean but perhaps your mum has been very busy with one thing and another too.  So if you don't get anything done for this year - think about next year cos all fashion designers are thinking way way ahead aren't they and what fashions will be for the year after as soon as they have finished the previous years if you know what I mean.  That goes for interiors and no matter what you are planning you need to be at least a year ahead if not more.  So there's always plenty of time to sort something out for whatever year you choose! wink

Talk soon wink

agree with housedoc, since you can't sew cos you don't have a free place for it you can make
some sketches - let's say for your next year collection  SmileyinBox
